Saltburn-By-the-Sea

A Photography Project by Francis Fitzgerald

Intro

This site is an ongoing project that aims to produce a visual record of people and place in Saltburn-By-The-Sea. At the outset, it is the work of just one photographer, so the editing and choice of subjects is inevitably going to be subjective.

The project is inspired by an idea of David Hurn, a renowned Magnum photographer, who has documented life in Wales (amongst other projects) for several decades. He lived in Tintern in the Wye Valley for several years and contributes to a similar photography project about that village. This is what he says about that project:

“I do believe there is merit in a singular voice looking at a village over an extended period of time. If done honestly, with a point of view and with accuracy I am sure ones pictures will end up in a museum or village history society, or suchlike, sometime. I am saying this because anyone can do it in their own area. It just needs tenacity, a willingness to find a small slot for the rest of ones life. I encourage others to start”.

With Hurn’s words as a guiding principle, here is a personal portrait of Saltburn.

Image sets can be found in ‘Recent Posts’ or ‘Archive’ in the Menu list.

Oh and I also encourage anyone to seek out Davids own work on Instagram (or anywhere else for that matter). instagram.com/davidhurnphoto/
